In San Diego, a workprint was screened for test audiences. This contained around 5 minutes of deleted scenes. All of the deleted scenes appear in the Special Edition DVDs and the Blu-rays. The workprint is also very poor quality, with the audio and picture cutting out at random times and the picture suffering from severe discoloration and framing issues. The workprint is also watermarked with a warning, “DO NOT COPY”.
The workprint contains a deleted scene with Randall going into a Chinese thrift store. He attempts to talk to the shopkeeper about finding a gift for his son. However, the shopkeeper cannot speak English and has trouble interpreting what Randall is saying and she keeps offering him items that he doesn’t want. Then, Mr. Wing’s grandson, comes up to Randall and says there’s something he might like in his grandfather’s store. Randall follows him out while the shopkeeper comes back from the storage.
The workprint cuts out a scene of Mr. Wing’s grandson explaining the three rules of how to maintain the mogwai and some footage of the credits.
The workprint contains a deleted scene with Billy at the bank. He attempts to compliment Kate, but awkwardly does so. Gerald calls him into Mr. Corben’s office. Mr. Corben scolds Billy for not being punctual. Billy tries to explain his tardiness, but Gerald laughs it off. Billy then goes back to work.
The workprint contains a deleted scene with Billy going up to his room and going through his comic drawings.
The workprint cuts out some footage of Billy breaking the eggs.
The workprint contains two deleted scenes. It first starts off with Billy running into his local reverend in his church. The reverend tries to give Billy a Christmas card for his family, but has misplaced it. Then, Billy enters his bank. Kate tells him to enter Mr. Corben’s office. She reveals that Mrs. Deagle will be making the bank foreclose the mortgages of households that currently are unemployed, where the land will be used to create a nuclear plant. Kate tells Billy that both her and him will be part of the foreclosure. Gerald walks in on the two, and threatens to tell Mr. Corben about this, unless Kate would be willing to go on a date with him. Kate declines and walks out.
The workprint removes some footage of the mogwai crying out for food and Billy telling them to quiet down.
The workprint contains a deleted scene with Murray and Sheila. Sheila asks Murray about the noodle factory. Murray states that Mrs. Deagle had sold the factory and it would not return.
The workprint shortens some footage of the gremlins ransacking and drinking in the bar.
The workprint contains a deleted scene with Billy and Kate in the bank. After walking around, they discover Mr. Corben’s dead body, after his head was smashed in by a clock. Billy also discovers Gerald alive and locked in a vault. Billy asks for the keys to unlock the vault door. Gerald, who has gone insane, thinks that by unlocking the door, they will be promoted. Billy decides to close the door, thinking it’s best to leave in the vault. Kate and Billy leave while Gerald continues to rant about their “scheme”.
The workprint shortens a shot of Stripe looking for some candy.
