In 2003, Lionsgate released the rough cut as a DVD screener. This was sent out to video stores while the movie was being was still being edited. As a result, some of the special effects are missing, the color grading is different, the prologue is missing and there is an alternate temporary soundtrack. The workprint also has some alternate and additional shots, none of which appear on the official DVD or Blu-ray. There is a property tagline that shows up throughout the movie that says the disc is not for sale or rental.

The workprint removes the prologue. A narrator opens a book titled Leprechaun. The narrator reveals that a king had summoned the Leprechauns to protect the gold he had from foreign enemies. They had successfully protected the gold until the king died. The Leprechauns then returned back to the forest, except for one Leprechaun, who continues to protect the gold.
