8 Simple Rules: Pilot: DVD Vs. Workprint

In April 26, 2002, a rough cut was made and presented to network executives. This is the original pilot, which is titled “A Few Simple Rules”. The workprint also has a couple of deleted scenes and a few extended scenes, none of which appear on the DVD. There is also a few sound differences as well. The workprint is also darker in video quality.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer title scene. It is titled “A Few Simple Rules” rather than “8 Simple Rules… for Dating My Teenage Daughter”. There is also an additional shot of the Hennessy house and a longer shot of Cate coming down the stairs.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer scene of Paul suggesting that she should call in sick. In the workprint, Paul jokes that the hospital would know about people being sick.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer scene of Paul trying to convince Cate to take some time off work so he can go help his boss Ed with a boat for an upcoming boat show. The workprint has Cate telling Paul that she has lives to save. Paul responds back by saying the boat show.

The workprint contains a deleted scene. Cate tells Paul that Kerry has been moody recently and thinks that she is on her period. Paul then asks why she can say she has a period whenever she is moody but he can not. Cate tells him she does not have the time to explain why and then leaves.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer scene. Rory comments that his friend Josh is a freak after revealing that he shows Bridget’s underwear to his friends. The DVD has a longer shot of Bridget getting ready to punch Rory.

The workprint contains an extended scene. Paul asks Kerry if high schoolers say goodbye to their parents anymore. The DVD has a longer shot of Kerry exiting the van.

The workprint contains an extended scene. First, there’s a slightly longer shot of Kerry walking away after Paul yells out she forgot his lunch. Then there’s an additional shot of Paul’s workplace and then there’s a longer shot Paul walking in.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer shot of Tommy saying that he only has sons. In the workprint, he jokes about not having any plumbing issues.

The workprint contains two additional shots of Mrs. Connelly stuttering after interrupting Paul and Cate arguing.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer. In the workprint, Cate assures Mrs. Connelly that she and Paul will have a talk with Kerry. Paul says they will deal with this problem together, unless it involves female stuff. He then begins to talk about how he is charge of Rory and how he was able to get into the flag football team. In the DVD, there is an alternate shot of Mrs. Connelly telling Paul and Cate that they should have a talk with Kerry and a longer shot of Cate walking out of Mrs. Connelly’s office.

The workprint contains a deleted scene. Paul tells Ed that he only has a few more improvements for his new column. He tries to get Ed to hang up so he can send over his work. When he does hang up, it reveals that he has not even started. The DVD has an alternate shot of Paul working on his column.

The workprint contains an alternate and longer scene. In the workprint, Paul tells the security guard that he thinks Kyle has condoms on him and that he is wearing one now. The DVD has an alternate shot of Paul asking to borrow the security’s guard pepper spray and an additional shot of the security guard walking away.

The workprint contains an extended scene. Cate begins to laugh at the fact that Paul is stressing out after one day of taking care of the kids. He tells her it is not funny and then suggests that she should quit her job and sell the house if that means he does not have to take care of the kids. The DVD has an alternate shot of Paul on the couch.
